TaylorBanksCarsonVanPelt
They really wanted to franchise DJ and give Saquon the biggish contract. DJ's agent gummed up the works and wanted more... Giants coming off a fake playoff win against the Vikings and Schoen caves to Mara by keeping the good soldier DJ happy with a balloon contract while tagging Saquon. This does not seem to have gone off well in the locker room either. RB's on mediocre or bad teams can suck up a lot of cash... but the genesis of the Giants problems lies with giving away far too much money to a QB2 to be a consistent QB1. If wishes were horses (Knights) the kingdom would never have been lost...

If wishes were horses (Knights) the kingdom would never have been lost... That's my thing. The whole argument of "signing Jones doesn't mean we had to let Barkley go" is moot. Signing a below average QB to a contract that eats up 20% of your teams cap, when that could be used to not only retain Barkley but still build the exact same team we have now (minus Jones) and have enough left over for another player or two of starting quality. We kept lesser talent, and let go of talent. This doesn't make teams better, unless you already have a very talented team. The Bills could jettison Diggs because they got a world class QB and one of the better RBs in the NFL. The Chiefs can trade Tyreek because they have Mahomes and Kelce. We can't let players like Barkley go because our QB is Jones.
mastershake
Signing lineman is NOT why we failed to retain Barkley. We had the money. We signed Devin Singletary for nearly same cap hit (granted, deferred salary on Barkley), plus scrubs like McCloud are a $3M cap hit. Then there we several restructures done later on, post free agency/draft. You could even argue that cutting Slayton to retain Barkley was an option ($5M in cap savings in that scenario). The money was there. The good decision making by the front office was not.
