Plax 4 Prez
Diamondbacks visit Mets for three-game series Arizona (29-20) at Ny Mets (30-19) 7:10 pm EDT FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks make their first visit to Shea Stadium this season in the opener of a three-game set with the New York Mets on Monday. The Diamondbacks had won five straight games and 10 of their last 12 overall before a heartbreaking 5-4 setback to Cincinnati on Sunday in which Reds pinch hitter Javier Valentin hit a game-winning two-run homer in the ninth to avoid a sweep. Luis Gonzalez had two RBI and Conor Jackson and Shawn Green recorded two hits apiece in the loss. Arizona will turn to Claudio Vargas (5-2, 4.93 ERA), who won his previous outing, a 7-3 triumph over Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Dominican righthander threw six innings while yielding two runs and five hits. In order to help his club continue its successful run, Vargas will have to reverse his fortune against the Mets, against whom he has an 0-1 record and an immense 10.97 ERA in four appearances, including one start. New York gives the ball to Steve Trachsel (2-4, 4.99), who attempts to stop a personal three-game slide. He failed to get a decision in a 9-8 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday. Trachsel was tagged for six runs, seven hits and four walks in five frames. The 35-year-old owns a 3-2 mark with a 3.00 ERA in eight starts against the Diamondbacks. The Mets took two of three in their weekend series with Florida after Sunday's 7-3 win. Orlando Hernandez, who was acquired in a trade with Arizona on Wednesday, struck out seven in five innings and Carlos Beltran registered his 14th home run of the year. gateb
Cohen is supplying some weather jokes tonight. "Beltran tried to supply some thunder." "The Mets begin to pour it on." Says it right after the rain starts. It's a boring night and it deserves to be posted. 4-1 Mets
