Virginia Giant
What is the point of football anymore? Penalties aren't called consistently and any play over 30 yards is negated due to penalty. Not just the Giants, this isn't an angry Giants fan rant, just in general there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to penalties. Holds happen 9 out of 10 plays, but only get called in big situations. Block in the back happens on every punt return, yet seem to only get called on a big run back. PI could probably get called on every throw, on both offense and defense, but only gets called on big plays. If the Giants get a big gain, I look for the flag. if the big play is missed through the air, I look for the PI flag. It sucks, penalties determine games, and not when they are committed, but when they are called.
Tempest
It is a hard job being a ref and making a decision on a penalty that could be happening 15 yards from you and moving fast. They get it right more often than not. I always expect a flag on big plays and yeah wish penalties didn't just kill that drive/momentum.
Storm
9 times out of 10 the block in the backs have no bearing on the play whatsoever, either.

I listening to a Rich Eisen podcast or whatever where he talked with a ref about the idea of adding more refs on the field to pick up more calls/clean up the game, but the ref went on to say that it isnt a matter of missing calls but which calls to make. There isnt a single play run in the NFL that a penalty doesnt occur in some form. Holding, illegal contact, illegal block, whatever.
Treehugger
I was more upset because the "block in the back" was made to from the side, to the shoulder. Meanwhile the Saints have apparently gone 5 straight games without a holding call on either O or D line...
GorillaNJ
It is the inconstancy that really makes it frustrating. The PI called on Apple was almost the same exact play that did not get called when it happened to Odell.

PI should be reviewable, IMO.
Storm
One guy was hit in stride the other had to stop and come back to the ball leaving the cbs momentum to take him into the receiver. If you want to say the contact made it tough to catch the ball, sure. But it would have been a lame penalty and a bail out.

The rules are the rules though. If the CB can't make a play on the ball then he has no choice but to run himself out of the play. Running through the receiver isn't an option and is almost always called as PI.
Herc
It's not just the Giants. They are really ticky tacky with any decent return and I honestly think it's a mandate from NFL to referees to discourage teams from returning punts for safety reasons
Lughead
And what's up with the defensive false starts being instantly called dead ball? No more free plays for QB's Rodgers was pissed Monday night that he didn't get a "free" play. I can see if the dl jumps and touches an lineman but used to be if you jumped on D you could still get back before the hike. Now if a Dlineman jumps the Olineman can jump right back at him or get in a block stance and it goes against the D line man . This is the way it seems lately. Sephiroth
Bad officiating is an NFL tradition. It's one of the reasons I've gone from watching 5 games per week to watching one.

Pretty consistent rule... if the D-line jumps in the neutral zone, and it causes an O-lineman to jump, or even if O-lineman reaches out and touches D-lineman in the neutral zone, the play is automatically dead, and it's a neutral zone infraction or encroachment. D-lineman jumps in the neutral zone, and nobody else on offense jumps pre-snap, the player has the opportunity to get back before the snap, and if he doesn't, it's a free play and an offsides penalty. There's nothing wrong with that rule.
Storm
I think it's when the dlineman jumps, gets back, and THEN the offensive lineman moves that has caused the scrutiny recently. The Packers oline did that 2 or 3 times the other night. They still called offsides. At that point, in my opinion, it should be a false start. Herc
They did it last night against dallas. He jumped back with plenty of time, no one moved, and they stopped the play anyway

Storm
Is there a chance that the ref on the field has a better view than you do? Is that a serious question? Do you have a better view in attendance at the stadium or at home?

Lately they(some refs) seem to have been calling the D off-sides and killing the play (but not in every case. ) thus nulling the "free play." Storm
It's not really a valid point. Of course the ref on the field doesn't have a better view. Spectators see the whole field and multiple replays.
