The New York Giants have announced they have terminated the contract of veteran offensive lineman J.D. Walton, their starting center last season.

Walton, who was in the second year of the two-year, $6 million contract he signed last offseason, was due to count for $3.625 million against the salary cap. By releasing him, the Giants will save $3M, which will boost their projected cap space to more than $13 million.

With Walton no longer on the team, second-year man Weston Richburg, the team’s second-round draft pick last year, is projected to become the starting center, though head coach Tom Coughlin, during last month’s combine, refused to anoint Richburg as the tart, instead noting that the former Colorado State product would compete for the job.

Last month, the Giants signed former CFL standout offensive lineman Brett Jones. Jones, a center for the Calgary Stampeders, will also compete for the Giants starting center job.
