BlueInCanada
GMB and Sportswrath users everywhere proceed to the nearest four lane highway. Tom Coughlin will return to New York Giants in 20158 By Dan Hanzus Around the NFL Writer Published: Dec. 29, 2014 at 12:28 p.m. Updated: Dec. 29, 2014 at 12:46 p.m. Tom Coughlin will be back with the New York Giants in 2015. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Coughlin has been told his job is safe, per a team source. The move comes one day after the Giants finished a 6-10 season with a loss to the Eagles. Coughlin came to the Giants in 2004 and has served as Eli Manning's coach during the quarterback's entire career in New York. Coughlin has won two Super Bowls in his 11 seasons, but the Giants have not returned to the playoffs in the three years since they beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Coughlin has a 176-96 record in New York and an 8-3 mark in the playoffs. Coughlin will be 69 by the start of the 2015 season, but he believes that starting his head-coaching career at 49 years old (with the Jaguars in 1995) makes him young for the profession. The Giants finished with a losing record for the second-consecutive season -- a first in the Coughlin era -- but there were positives to take out of the year. Eli Manning had the best statistical season of his career under new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, while rookie wideout Odell Beckham Jr. emerged as one of the most electric playmakers in the game. New York has work to do in other areas of the roster, but this team is not far away from contending in the NFC East. On Monday, the decision was made that Coughlin remains the right choice to lead the franchise. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000451342/article/tom-coughlin-will-return-to-new-york-giants-in-2015 I'm glad he's back for one more season, sure up the offense and defense, then think about who is going to replace the guy. Sephiroth
I'm ok with him being back for one more year, but honestly? This is fucking it. 9-7 to 7-9 to 6-10. Clearly things are not headed in the right direction. Enough excuses. Its playoffs or bust. I have a feeling we'll be saying "we kept him one year too long" come November. But I guess we'll see. BlueInCanada
BiC, how many seasons do you think he should have before we return to the playoffs? Five? Six? But you said that the Giant's arnt even close to being in the playoffs, they're not one player or one coaching change away. This team is more than just a roster overhaul and new coordinator away from being competitive. The shit drafts from 2009-2012 are really biting the Giants in the ass, and there's still gaping holes all over the roster. Moving forward, this team is in real trouble. So if this is a case, would a new HC make a difference? How many season would a new HC be allowed to not make the playoffs? One? Two? Before you would want him replaced? fringe
So long as Fewel goes, I don't care... Why do we seem to live or die by the strength of the coordinators? Other teams live or die by their HC. Teflon Tom strikes again.
BlueInCanada
Why do we seem to live or die by the strength of the coordinators? Other teams live or die by their HC. Teflon Tom strikes again. Pete Carrol relies on Quinn and Bevell to run the offense and defense, and without that defense that Quinn runs the Seahawks are nothing. Belicheck was FORCED to give up the play calling duties on defense years ago, and relies on Brady and McDaniels to make the team work offensively. The list can go on for most HC in the league who rely on their coordinators; Tomlin, Rivera, Fox. Sure you have guys like Andy Reid or McCarthy who are basically the team OC and HC, but that's usually an exception for coaches.
Sephiroth
But you said that the Giant's arnt even close to being in the playoffs, they're not one player or one coaching change away. Yes, they're not close to being in the playoffs. Yes, I personally think this team needs a change at the very least at GM, but probably at HC as well. And yes, by the time we're finished "rebuilding" if its a two or three year process, we'll need to replace our coach and probably our QB anyway, so we might as well start on the process now. I think that if you're going to rebuild, you rebuild with all new people, not with the people that hold on to assistants too long, have four straight years of shitty drafts (that's hamstrung your current team), and have a conditioning program that sees a third of your team in IR at its worst, or missing significant playing time at its best. In other words, you rebuild with new people, not with the people who oversaw your slide from a Super Bowl to 6-10. See how that works? See how the ideas of us rebuilding and hiring new people aren't mutually exclusive? Ok, now your turn, BiC. We've missed the playoffs in five of the past six years. Our record has declined every year for the past three. The roster has holes at every position except QB. You wanted to jump all over me for suggesting this year is where you draw the line, so how many years do YOU suggest we hold on to this GM/HC team? You're obviously good with four... so do we go to five? Six? Six shitty seasons before we make a change?
fringe
Yes but the ultimate responsibility is on the HC. Seems the NY media leaves Teflon Tom alone and attacks the OC's to excess.

When do you stop saying its the OC, DC, and Special Teams coaches but not the guy who hires them?

Storm
Not for nothing but like has been posted here, McAdoo took a bottom half of the league offense and turned it into a top ten offense with little more than the addition of a couple role players on offense and a replacement for Nicks in Beckham (who will, arguably, have a better career). He didn't have Cruz. There's a lot to be said about the difference a change in coordinators can make. It'd be folly to find a new head coach at this point. Tom will have this team winning either this coming season or the next.
K3VIN
well looks like i wont have to bother tuning in next year. The well get a new guy the year after that and be rebuilding 2-4 years after he is hired so Ill watch Giants football in 2020.

LOL, driz- that could be 5 places. with an easier schedule. hardly a turnaround. lots of garbage time there too. 428 yards passing means crap if you don't win. and there again, if the offense is better, why aren't there more wins. Answer: Because our DC sucks- but Tom is great! (at what exactly?)
NightFire
Not only that I bet Gilbride could have done the same. OBJ is ROY contender so I would imagine many OCs could have turned the O around with that type of talent. Also HCs are a product of their hiring just like in real life management jobs. As has been pointed out apparently Coughlin gets another slide because it's always the assistant coaches fault for all ills. Coughlin apparently plays the office politics game well. Answer: Because our DC sucks- but Tom is great! (at what exactly?) Watch your mouth dude, that's a two time Super Bowl winning coach. You guys are fucking nuts thinking that this is on Tom. I really question whether you jokers bothered to watch the final half of the season or simply jerked off whilst posting complaints on this board. There's guys on here who would have killed to see a winning season when they were watching in their younger years, let alone two Super Bowls. You have an offense that has the potential to be downright dangerous next year and a team that is clearly still under Tom's thumb and wants to play for him. Subtract out a special teams snafu and the Giants probably beat a 9-6 Philly team, btw. You're going to complain about not holding another team to under 400 yards and less points than what your offense scored and then claim it isn't on Fewell, but rather Coughlin? There are games where that Fewell had no semblance of gameplan and that's on Coughlin? You want Coughlin to fire him? That's not his Coughlin's job. Nor is it Coughlin's job to turn his back on his assistants in the media to quiet fans like yours rumblings. I bet he couldn't have. He managed an anemic offense with Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, and Rueben Randle on the field at the same time. With a more athletic tight end and a playmaking running back that he never wanted to use.

fringe
Notice not one mention of what Teflon did well this year. Injuries? That's not on him. Depth? That's not on him. Crucial penalties and turnovers? Not Tom's fault. But the 2 super bowl seasons, he was the maestro!

Crucial penalties and turnovers? Not Tom's fault. But the 2 super bowl seasons, he was the maestro! How could you possibly put depth, turnovers, and penalties on Tom exclusively and not consider general management and the players themselves? This is beyond idiotic. Coughlin's team doesn't exist in a vacuum that allows him to control every aspect of what happens on the field and in Jerry Reese's office. And Manning cut turnovers down dramatically, not just interceptions, but sack-fumbles, too. About the only players fumbling with regularity was Preston Parker and Larry Donnell. I personally, am very happy Tom Coughlin is staying. It was the best offseason move the team could have possibly made. And it's a good thing they don't listen to a minority of fans' knee-jerk reactions. Or we would be the Jets and Raiders.
fringe
I didn't say it was Tom exclusively. But to give him a pass is "idiotic." 6-10 means the whole team failed. And he is the leader. OK I see they are lame ducking him for next season. Hardly a vote of confidence. More like "The guy we were interested in went back to college so I guess you can stay. We certainly don't want to pay you 6 million+ to sit on your ass. "
