Mr. P
EAST RUTHERFORD — The Giants did their best to manufacture some linebacker depth this offseason with the additions of Jameel McClain in free agency and Devon Kennard in the draft. But an injury to Jon Beason — one that will optimistically put him in the starting lineup opening weekend but could realistically sideline him for a little longer — changes things quickly. If the season started tomorrow, they would be in a similar position as last season, with one dependable but injury-prone veteran in the middle and a platoon of Mark Herzlich, Spencer Paysinger, Jacquian Williams and Kennard to round out the outside spots. Needless to say, getting lucky with an undrafted free agent could go a long way for the Giants in training camp. That's why the Giants have been rotating plenty through their second-string base defense during OTA's and minicamp. One of the most frequently-seen faces was Dan Fox, an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. "It was really cool to be in there with some guys who have been in the game a bunch," Fox said after a minicamp practice last week. "Once I figure out where I need to be and the objectives I need to get done on each play, it's fun and it's easy. It's just playing football." Fox led Notre Dame in tackles his senior year and started every game for the past three. The Fighting Irish played a 3-4 scheme and Fox bounced around both inside positions after starting his career on the outside. "This is kind of a new position a little bit, I've been doing a lot of Sam and Will in camp but have played some Mike. I've done a little bit of everything and it's fun learning all the positions. I'm just trying to make the team." Fox hopes that putting the pads on in a few weeks will be the equalizer that can set him apart. On tape at Notre Dame, the 6-3, 235-pound linebacker shows some solid instincts. As his former head coach, Brian Kelly, explains in the video below, he was playing out of position and had to learn the Mike spots once the Irish roster depleted there. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2014/06/giants_roster_dan_fox_could_be_surprise_of_linebacker_group.html

CrazedDogs
Its kind of weird, he runs a real slow looking 4.6-something in the video. So I'm watching the highlights and note the lack of explosiveness or suddenness.... but then I think back to how slow he looked running sub-4.7. I guess some people just look slow even when they're moving pretty fast. Dude is probably roster filler though. Terrible sign if we see him starting this season. fringe
The recent Giants have set a very low bar for "surprised" in the linebacker role.

JMFP
He's no Spencer Paysinger, that's for sure. Seriously, that's the name of a pair of shoes, not a linebacker. "Hey Brad, check out these loafers I purchased......Spencer Paysingers, baby!"
