Bigblue25
Especially after Franklin from GB ended his career on a kickoff return Published: June 23, 2014 at 09:40 a.m. Updated: June 23, 2014 at 10:22 a.m. Will Odell Beckham return kicks for New York Giants? Kevin Patra REPLAYGiants select Beckham Jr. with No. 12 pick New York Giants rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham has been described as the most pro-ready route runner coming out of the draft. Now there is a chance he also adds punt and/or kick return duties to his job description. When Beckham was drafted with the 12th overall pick, general manager Jerry Reese made a point to call the 5-foot-11 receiver a "dynamic" punt and kickoff returner. Given the generally difficult transition from college to pros that many rookie receivers go through, the question remains whether the Giants will want or need to put those skills to the test -- and put his body at risk. "Will he do each of them?" special teams coach Tom Quinn said last week, per NJ.com's Jordan Raanan. "You don't know based on what the active list is for the game, but we're prepping him to do both and prepping (Trindon) Holliday to do both and Rueben Randle's still back there (on punts) and (Jerrel) Jernigan, so we're trying to have a deep pool to choose from." As Quinn noted, sometimes getting return duties actually helps players in other aspects of the game. "A lot of times it gives those guys confidence and they progress on and they end up being offensive or defensive players later on down the road," he said. The return jobs essentially are Holliday's to lose. However, the free-agent acquisition must make the roster first. As Raanan notes, coach Tom Coughlin doesn't like to reserve roster spots for specialists. If Holliday can't prove to be a viable back-end receiver, he could be a candidate to be cut. If that happens, Beckham certainly will be a nominee to add return duties to the important role he's in line to play alongside Victor Cruz and Randle in the passing game. gmenroc
They would be morons for doing it...because they brought in Demps and Holiday to do the very same things. I understand that having a logjam at a position is not a bad thing, but when you have proven commodities, use them. Beckam Jr is not proven, regardless of being a high draft pick. BlueInCanada
I'd have no problem with it, if he was the better returner come season start.
Tempest
All they're doing is preparing him for the role and they'd be morons not to. I could see him doing one or two this season.
Herc
holliday is a complete waste of a roster spot if he isn't returning
gmenroc
holliday is a complete waste of a roster spot if he isn't returning I would tend to agree, but with his speed, I'm interested in how McAdoo will scheme to get him open in the offense (how about a 25 yard lateral on 1st down and have the offense set up what would essentially be a punt return...) I'd be concerned with Eli's accuracy too...don't want to overthrow a guy that short or lead him into a big hit. Seriously though, you could say the same about Demps, though his defensive ability is marginally better than that of Holiday with the offense. Sephiroth
It can't hurt to see what the kid has. Also, word out of camp is that Holliday has been running at the 4th WR spot and actually looks pretty good.
Mr. P
If Eli Manning is our best returner, put his ass back there.
gmenroc
I'm all for seeing what he has, so long as we don't ever see it in when the games count.
fringe
Kick returning is almost obsolete so that leaves punt returns. Yeah, whomever is best at it. #10 does it on the Eagles and last I looked he was pretty valuable.

I'm all about getting our best players the ball as often as possible.
Herc
i'd be shocked if holliday were getting on the field at all much less taking snaps from jernigan when the season starts. if a team can't find a way to make you a contributing wide receiver with peyton manning then you are probably nothing more than a returner

RandolphScott
Just as long as we don't have him return punts for the Jets annual superbowl win in August, I'm fine with it.
SweetZombieGsus
I see not enough people in the front office remember Jason Sehorn. Didn't we have Tiki returning kicks early in his career?
JMFP
I see not enough people in the front office remember Jason Sehorn. Didn't we have Tiki returning kicks early in his career? Agreed. I could see them trying this if the season hung in the balance, and nobody else was capable of returns.....but this guy is supposed to be replacing Nicks.....no need to gamble like that. Mr. P
and also, you gotta give more than just 1 or 2 guys reps back there. injuries occur and whoever steps in would have to know the deal. every year in camps victor cruz gets reps at returns, but we've never seen it in game. Herc
Maybe Beckham is still the better returner. maybe, but i don't think that means we should throw him out there when we have one of the best returners of the past few years on our roster with no other skill other than returning kicks and punts. dez stopped returning, patrick peterson is going to stop returning and they're the best on their teams.
