The New York Giants, for now, are staying put in the backfield.

NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala reported Wednesday, via a team source, that the Giants will see how backup running back Da'Rel Scott fares in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys before signing free-agent help.

With just Scott and Michael Cox behind starter David Wilson, the Giants on Tuesday hosted free-agent visits with Leon Washington, Beanie Wells and Jonathan Dwyer, Kinkhabwala reported.

New York got paper thin in the backfield after Andre Brown was placed on injured reserve with the designated to return tag after he fractured his leg in the team's preseason finale. Brown is eligible to practice after Week 6 and play after Week 8. But with the Giants' bye falling in Week 9, we won't see a Wilson-Brown backfield until, at the earliest, Week 10 against the Oakland Raiders.

If Scott struggles early, expect the Giants to add help next week. They might be in the hunt for a kick returner, too, considering Wilson is slated for such a heavy role on offense this season.

A Scott-Wilson backfield has big-play potential written all over it. I'm not sure how Scott would do as a short yardage guy (which is what we really need) but coaches on the team say he's actually faster than Wilson.

I'm glad they're at least giving him a shot. It's not like Beanie Wells and Leon Washington are going to be off the market in five days.

I'm very excited, and think Scott is going to turn some heads.

I think this is a good move. But Scott is probably thinking he could be a free agent by next Tuesday, and he'd be right. He better perform.

I think a lot of this too may have to do with the fact that free agents signed before the first game have their entire contract guaranteed. You're going to see a lot of pickups around the league come Tuesday.
