Bigblue25
I remember watching Dayne during a bowl game... first time I ever saw the guy, and my dad said, "that's the guy the Giants are probably going to draft." My reply? "He looks fat and slow. Plus, who couldn't run with those holes that line is opening for him." Yeah, I wanted Alexander instead, if we were going to go RB. Alexander put on a show in the SEC championship, against Florida.
TaylorBanksCarsonVanPelt
I don't know man, taking Cedric Jones when Ray Lewis, Eddie George and Terry Glenn were still there is a head scratcher. Of course, no one knew what any of them would become. Cedric Jones was so well adapted to being blind in one eye that he was able to compensate for it on the college level. The Giants were caught flat footed when they found out...AFTER...they drafted him.
TaylorBanksCarsonVanPelt
The tragedy of that draft was George Young not knowing Cedric Jones was blind in one eye. Sorry Bro...didn't see you had posted this already...
TaylorBanksCarsonVanPelt
Lol. Didn't Cedric Jones get thumbed in the eye during training camp? that's how they found out he was legally blind in one eye....
Mr. P
that's how they found out he was legally blind in one eye.... no they knew he was blind in one eye the whole time, training camp is when they found out about the new eye injury he got a month before the draft. He always put up great number against bad competition. But when played against good teams... he choked.
mastershake
1989 was a particularly good draft (we're talking 3-4 guys who were starters the following year for a super bowl team): C Brian Williams G Bob Kratch DB Greg Jackson RB Dave Meggett TE Howard Cross DB Myron Guyton

JMFP
Spending a 1st round draft pick on Dave Brown has to rank down there as one of George Young's worst moves....and considering he sent Phil Simms packing to make room for Brown, it's even worse. Yeah, who spends a first round pick in the supplemental draft. I was 13, and went, ah fuck who gives up a first rounder for a Spurrier QB

fishgutmartyr
The failure rate of Big 10 RBs on this team is really rather remarkable, especially when you consider the fact that most of the guys on that list were high draft picks: 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks... .it's not like these guys were late round development prospects, at the time. Classic example of right idea, wrong personnel. Most of those picks happened when the Big Ten was all about offensive lines. What would have happened if we picked a guard from Wisconsin rather than Dayne, for instance?

Caused Reeves to hate Young all the more...because he had to be the one to ask for the playbook back from an unsuspecting Simms...while knowing what an utter steaming pile of shit Dave Brown was...Dan saw any chance of the playoffs fly right out the window for the next couple of years... RandolphScott
Yeah, I hated Dave Brown as a kid too (imagine everyone else is rocking an Aikman, Young, Elway, Marino, etc jersey and you walk into school with Dave Brown on...fuck you) but it's not like the guy had any talent to work with. Horrible offensive line, no running backs, horrid receivers. Chris Calloway was his best wide out. Chris Callaway wouldn't even make the 2013 Giants roster. I even gave my father shit. My 1st game I ever went to was in 1996 against the Patriots. Giants got out to a 22-3 lead and promptly lost 23 to 22. Dave Brown was QB. 16 years later, we take my brother to a game and the little fuck gets to watch Eli Manning throw for 510 yards in a 4th quarter comeback against the Bucs. GorillaNJ
I had a Ron Dayne jersey I still wear mine.... and really NFL network... this hurts... Regrettably, the Giants drafted him with the 11th overall pick only to see him gain weight and not yards over the next four years

George Young will always be the remembered to me as the man who rebuilt and then dismantled a great Giants team. People always talk about Parcells walking out on the Giants......well, George Young was the dude who was trying to hire Bo Schembechler away from Michigan the year both of Parcells parents died during his rookie year, when he went 3-12-1. We'll never know for sure, because the Giants front office is way to classy to admit it, but I'd bet the ranch that the only reason Parcells was not canned was because Wellington Mara vetoed the decision. Again, I have no proof of that, but I couldn't see Wellington firing a rookie coach who just lost both his parents. That sort of scumbag move was entirely in Young's toolbox though, and don't think for a second that Parcells ever forgot. And before Parcells won his 2nd championship, George made it clear that Belichick and Coughlin weren't in his plans either. No fucking way did Parcells split without Belichick and Coughlin knowing the plan. Between the 3 of them, 7 Lombardi Trophies, but none of them as smart as George Young, apparently......so imagine the shock when the Giants looked like dog shit on a summertime sidewalk after he annointed Ray Handjob to lead the team. Dumping Phil Simms for Dave Brown was the cherry on that crap sundae.

JMFP
As far as best draft pick, I'd have to go with Lawrence Taylor. Granted, he was the #2 pick of the draft, but still, he was by far the most impressive NY Giant I've ever watched.
