San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Smith has a partially torn left triceps but will attempt to play this postseason, sources told ESPN.

Smith suffered the injury against the New England Patriots on Dec. 16 and has not practiced since. The four-time Pro Bowler missed this past Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks with what the team listed as an elbow injury.

Smith likely will need surgery in the offseason, but the veteran defensive end and the 49ers are hoping he will be available to play in the postseason, according to sources.

The Niners (10-4-1) can clinch the NFC West title with a win Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. San Francisco also would secure a bye into the NFC divisional round with a win and a loss by the Green Bay Packers (11-4).

Smith's streak of 185 consecutive starts ended when he missed Sunday's loss to the Seahawks. Ricky Jean Francois started in Smith's place and recorded six tackles.

Smith, 33, has 66 tackles and three sacks this season.

So what, they beat the Cardinals? After the thumping they received from Seattle, they are clearly going nowhere. Harbaugh shit the bed when he named Kaepernick the starter. It was a bad call and he should've stayed with the veteran, who was the clear leader of the offense if not the team. Instead, he got too cute. Kaepernick is a nice player and has talent, but you're trying to win the Super Bowl now. And he's not ready for that. Alex Smith played lights out a year ago in the NFC divisional game against New Orleans. He's playoff tested. He's overcome a lot. And you put a 2nd year guy in there on a team that is trying to go deep in the playoffs? Crazy. Now that Justin Smith is going to be a shell of himself, they don't have a chance. One and done.

I can't really question that move... You've seen rookies set the league on fire and this Kaepernick guy looks better than Smith will ever be.

Never realized you could tear your triceps by holding offensive linemen.

It's only illegal if you get caught. Lol they are a good team, they just ran into a red hot Seattle, in Seattle, which has become the toughest place to play. The week before, they throttled Brady and were the best team in the nfl, one loss to a divisional rival on the road, doesn't mean they all the sudden suck.

Seattle found out that the way to beat the 9ers is to run up tempo offense. They usually only play 12 guys and they can get winded if you run enough plays.
