Treehugger Posted July 12, 2012 Share Posted July 12, 2012 Gold Medal upset at World Juniors A group of Canadian teenagers upset defending champion USA to win Gold at the 2012 IFAF U-19 World Championship in Austin, Texas. The Canadian team, composed largely of CJFL, OVFL Quebec CEGEP and first-year CIS players, jumped out to a 10-0 first half lead and went on to stun top-seeded USA 23-17 to capture the Gold Medal at the International Federation of American Football Under-19 Championship. “We had one goal and one goal in mind and that was to come back with a Gold Medal around our neck,” said Canada head coach Noel Thorpe after his nation’s victory in Burger Stadium in Austin, Texas. “These guys believed in it and they played 48 minutes of solid football. I couldn’t be prouder of these guys. “It was a hell of a game. It came down to an onside kick. It doesn’t get any closer than that.” The International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championship, hosted by USA Football, is an eight-day tournament that brings together eight teams (USA, Canada, Japan, Panama, Austria, France, Sweden and American Samoa) of high school-age players. Canada jumped to a 10-0 lead in the Gold Medal game when Alexandre Huard (Taft School, CT) returned a punt 59 yards for a score and Louis-Philippe Simoneau (F-X Garneau) kicked a 21-yard field goal. Simoneau’s field goal was set up by one of two interceptions by Canadian MVP Kevin McGee (volontaire de Sherbrooke). McGee ended the night with two picks and five tackles. “I’m happy for the team,” said McGee. “It’s an honor to be named MVP but this was a team victory. We worked really hard for two weeks. We’re really happy right now. This week has been the best experience of my life. I met some new people, I worked really hard and I think I’m a better football player after this.” The interception was the first turnover by the United States in six games of IFAF U19 Championship competition. The 3-0 lead also marked the first time the United States trailed in two championship tournament appearances. Canada upped the lead to 16-7 on the opening series of the third quarter as QB Will Finch (Burlington Stampeders) moved the Canadians 81 yards on five plays with running back Christopher Amoah (Dalbé-Viau) taking a screen pass and rumbling 26 yards for the score. A bad snap on the PAT left the lead at nine. Team USA answered on its next drive, moving 78 yards in 11 plays to trim the Canada lead to 16-14 with 4:08 left in the third quarter. Canada extended the lead with a 64-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter, upping the score to 23-14 with 5:10 left in the game on a 10-yard run by Mercer Timmis (Canisius prep, NY). “I think we did what we wanted to do running the football,” said Canada’s coach Thorpe. “We established ourselves at the line of scrimmage and they did a heck of a job – and our running backs as well. Our quarterbacks did a good job managing the football game and also running with the football. “It’s exactly what we thought it would be. We had to control the tempo of the football game and we knew it had to happen up front with the offensive line and that was our game plan going into the tournament and we kept with it all the way through.” Japan defeated Austria 7-0 in the Bronze medal game. Win the victory, Canada avenged a 2009 41-3 finals loss at the hands of the Americans at the inaugural IFAF U19 World Championship in Canton, Ohio. Yeah, Jack is like the dude from the gigantic, city high school bragging about whooping up on the tiny, rural, population 500 towns. They are just games, and who really cares which country is better at which sports? In general, though, as tourists, Canadians are the worst fucking group of people on the planet. I have never met such entitled, inconsiderate, and downright rude and nasty people as Canadians. Seriously, live in Niagara Falls for 2 days and anyone will feel the same way, including other Canadians. I can't even go to the International Tops Market (including the adjacent plaza) without an obstacle course of 6,000 shopping carts left in the lot, empty food bags and trash everywhere, entire wardrobes discarded NOT in any trash container (btw, don't you guys sell clothes up there? why do you all come here to do all of your shopping, seriously?), etc. etc. in the parking lots? The cross-border shopping is understandable; we're still paying around 15-25% more than the US$ sticker price on items, even though the CAN$ was stronger than the Greenback for quite a while. It's a hang-up from back when the CAN$ was worth 70c US and we're still getting hosed. So when your 'Black Friday' comes around things are at least half the price as they are just across the border; well worth the drive (if you live close enough). Man I was practically living in Vancouver...I was commuting weekly back and forth between Seattle and Vancouver back when the Canuckistani $ was .65-.75 cents to the Murrican $. I was like a visiting Oil Potentate.... Hit the restaurants and clubs like an avenging angel...had more one night poon tang kills dragged to my lair than I can remember. 50% of them were South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans) and the other 50% being mostly Whites, a sprinkling of Aboriginals (i.e. Native Americans...lol) and one Afro (GOD you guys still used that term back in the 90's). It was GOOD TIMES MAN... There was a Canuckistani restaurant owner who I became friendly with who was bemusedly pissed off at my success at suborning the local vassal population. I joked with him once..."don't cry bubby...I'm just cementing the relationship between our two countries...just think of it as a Brother's Style Anchsluss...you know Germany/Austria merging... That must be who they are/where they are from...there's a lot with the French accent and A LOT of Muslim and Indian-Canadians...I have a lot of Canadian friends, though, and most of them I consider pretty much American....because they are actually normal. But damn, some of the folks up there are incredibly nasty. (and I'm sure it's the same for us Americans when you see us at the casinos and strip clubs over the border, I'm not trying to say we don't have our own share of assholes, just that I have to deal with an influx of import-assholes in the summer months and around Xmas) I think I just have to get out of retail and start delivering pizzas or something.... I'll have to take a picture sometime...the lots at places like Kohl's and Target look like tornados hit the store and swept everything out into the lot, lol. Is border crossing like, easy for Canadians, though? For me, it'd require me to actually purchase a passport and wait in a line of cars for 2 hours.....and probably even longer coming back.
