Lughead Posted August 17, 2011 Share Posted August 17, 2011 The Giants have signed kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd. Lloyd has played for the Carolina Panthers since 2007, contributing on kickoffs. He was with the Ravens for two games in 2007. He’s yet to kick a field goal in a regular-season game and averages 66.9 yards over his career on kickoffs. He also has 64 touchbacks in his career as well. The Giants could be taking a look at Lloyd this week with Lawrence Tynes nursing a bruised right thigh. They brought in Shayne Graham for a visit but opted not to sign him. Lughead Posted August 17, 2011 Share Posted August 17, 2011 The team announced late today that it has signed Rhys Lloyd, a kicker with an unusual history. He has played in 50 NFL games and has kicked off 220 times – but has never attempted a regular season field goal or extra point. To make room on the roster, the Giants have waived/injured cornerback Woodny Turenne (calf). Rhys is one of the NFL’s premier kickoff specialists. Sixty-four of his 220 kickoffs have been touchbacks, a rate of 29.1 percent. In 2008, he led the NFL with 30 touchbacks on 88 kickoffs (34.1 percent) for the Carolina Panthers. The following season, he had 21 touchbacks on 71 kickoffs (29.6 percent). On March 8, 2010, Rhys signed with the Minnesota Vikings. But they released him in the final cutdown on Sept. 4 and the Panthers re-signed him on the 14th, two days after their season-opening loss to the Giants. Rhys then handled kickoffs for the final 15 games of the season and finished with 11 touchbacks on 50 kickoffs (22.0 percent). Rhys first entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2005. He was waived at the end of training camp and spent three weeks the following spring with the Green Bay Packers. He then re-signed with Baltimore and was on and off the Ravens’ roster several times in 2007. That season, Rhys played in two games for Baltimore and, after being waived and awarded to Carolina, one for the Panthers. Rhys was born in Dover, England and grew up in that country before moving with his family to Minnesota for high school. He played football and soccer at Eastview High School. Rhys started his collegiate career at Rochester Community and Technical College before spending two seasons at the University of Minnesota. He scored 101 points as a senior and finished his career 26-for-36 on field goal attempts. In the spring of 2007, Rhys played for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europa. He led the league in scoring and was named Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking a 56-yard field goal. Rhys was born on June 5, 1982. Tynes, the Giants’ kicker since 2007, bruised his thigh when he was hit by Sean Ware after the Panthers’ player blocked his 44-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter on Saturday. I mean damn.. as the coach to try one in a preseason game.. something is wrong right there... but on the other hand.. Tynes causes my heart to skip a beat each time he kicks... Important to note was that NFL kickoffs were from the 35 yard line from 1974 to 1993. Prior to the 1994 season they moved it back to the 30. Prior to 1974 teams kicked off from the 40 yard line. Daluiso kicked from both the 35 yard line and the 30 yard line, so I imagine earlier in his career his touchback percentage was much higher. I really would like to see Lloyd kick some field goals, and it will be awfully nice to see a touchback here and there, too. I might even cream my pants the first time Lloyd gets a touchback. Nothing makes me cream my pants more than a kicker that can kick it to the back of the endzone. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BTW Daliuso was not a FG kicker either......Parcells brought him in for Kick off's only.....after a year or two he let him take over the FG duties....which he handled very well Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
