so-cal dub
---FUCK--- Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell interviewed for the Panthers head-coaching job on Thursday, according to reports. Fewell is a "serious candidate" and "possibly a favorite" to become Panthers head coach, the Rock Hill Herald reports. The report by writer Darin Gantt via Twitter says, "I can promise you from conversations with folks up and down the building, Fewell is a very serious candidate here, and possibly a favorite." The Herald and the Charlotte Observer report that Panthers executives Marty Hurney and Danny Morrison met with Fewell on Thursday in New York City. Coincidentally, Fewell would replace John Fox, who was named head coach in Carolina after serving as Giants defensive coordinator. ...so when will the Giants DC merry go round start again? Storm
I really don't get it. Our defense wasn't that good.
Treehugger
I really don't get it. Our defense wasn't that good. It not really the point. He got a new team of guys to buy into him and his system in only a few months. That's the kind of guy you want stepping in to lead your team. I don't think he's a good fit for Carolina though, who should really target a vet coach to come in and start the rebuilding process.

JMFP
They were alot better this year. They still played very badly sometimes, but usually, they did well. They led the NFL in turnovers, except we sucked so badly with our offensive turnovers that it was tough to notice it. I would think that with another year under his belt here, the defense would be even better in 2011....not guarantees, of course.
BronxRik
The Carolina Panthers interviewed New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell on Thursday, sources told the Rock Hill Herald. Panthers executives Marty Hurney and Danny Morrison met with Fewell as the team begins its search to replace John Fox, whose contract wasn't renewed after nine seasons as head coach. So far, Carolina's search has focused mainly on defensive coordinators. The team has requested interviews with Cleveland's Rob Ryan, San Francisco's Greg Manusky and San Diego's Ron Rivera -- all defensive coordinators. Fewell, who grew up in Belmont, N.C., also has drawn interest from the Browns, 49ers and Denver Broncos. NFL.com Man, I was hoping Fewell would stick around another year or 2 and get the D to gel. I wasn't aware he was from N.C. either.
JMFP
Fox certainly will be considered for head-coaching openings around the league but he might get shut out. Accepting a coordinator position might be his only way to stay in the league in 2011. Fox ran the Giants defense from 1997-2001 and continues to have great support from upper management and ownership. Given that Coughlin will be 65 years old by the start of this coming season, Fox could view this is a chance to put in his time and perhaps replace Coughlin after he retires Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/giants/giants_fewell_could_be_favorite_OfmxApKbXS1WTpTdzgHQVM#ixzz1AJXztDsM
Lubeck
Read more: http://www.nypost.co...M#ixzz1AJXztDsM When I first heard yesterday that Fewell was leading the Carolina search that was my first thought, bring back Fox. Any of the "head coach in waiting" nonsense I'll leave to the Gary Myers and Jack Strouds of the world. My second thought was what is with Carolina poaching Giants DCs. My third was I could really use a slice of pizza.

Allstarjim
For most of the year, our defense was outstanding. He did have bad game plans against Indianapolis and Green Bay, and got a little conservative late in that 2nd Philly game. So there were a few games where I thought the defense wasn't where it could've or should've been. I do think Fewell would have that unit playing even better next year. But I think we'll be ok if he leaves, as long as Coughlin doesn't bring Sheridan or Tim Lewis back. With Mangini out in Cleveland, it remains to be seen if the new coach will want to replace the entire staff. If so, Rob Ryan would be available. Getting conservative would have been the thing to do. They KEPT blitzing when Philly needed to score quickly. The Celek TD? Blitzing. The 3rd and long at the 8 when Vick scrambled 33 yards? Blitz. At a time when Philly needed to score quickly they kept sending blitzes that leave the big play open when playing conservatively would be giving up 5-8 yards but also eating clock. I don't have a problem with him remaining aggressive. How many times have we everytime we go into that prevent defense and squander a lead? It was the execution.. remember when Ross took the wrong angle and went inside?

And there is a time and place for a prevent and that was the rare time and place where you have an offense that is the best big play offense in the league with limited time trying to get multiple scores. Exactly...and I think they got worn down; had no impact LB's and had to play 3 safeties all season; and used the Cover 2 entirely too much. Beyond that they were pretty decent this year. The defense improved quite a bit from the prior year, and you'd think if Fewell stays, he'd have a better feel for things, and the unit would be improved next year. But if Fewell does leave, they Giants have the personnel to run a solid defense with a competent replacement.

Oddly enough, after the game we heard stuff about going prevent in the 4th Q, but what you saw is what I saw too. With one caveat... the problem wasn't that they were still blitzing, the problem is the defensive line was all rushing upfield with complete disregard for keeping containment on Vick. The first 50 minutes of the game they'd blitz a lot, but there was always a pretty little semi-circle of guys between Vick and the open field. Worked beautifully, and its how teams have handled Vick, very successfully, ever since. But the last ten minutes it was wide open spaces for Vick to run and four or five defensive players running right past him, Freeney-style. Looking back, I wonder if that was by design; fake pass block then PULL the defensive linemen up field past the QB. Not likely, but who knows. If so, it sure worked. They should have just rushed their 4 best guys (Tuck, Osi, JPP, Canty), and flooded the passing lanes with their fastest defenders. Like you said, make them pay 30 seconds for every 10 yards.....ballgame over.
