Mr. P
Giants Place Wilkinson on IR; Sign CB DJ Johnson The GIants have placed LB Gerris Wilkinson on the season-ending injured reserve list. Wilkinson, who had surgery on Monday after dislocating his right wrist in Sunday's 21-20 loss to San Diego, has been unable to put together a full season due to various injuries since being drafted by the Giants in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He is in the final year of his contract and with Michael Boley and Bryan Kehl in front of him on the depth chart, it's not likely that the Giants will bring him back after his contract expires. Taking Wilkinson's place on the 53-man roster is CB Dominique "DJ" Johnson, a 6-2, 200-pounds rookie out of Jackson State who was on the Denver practice squad. Johnson, who transferred from Missouri after starting four games as a redshirt sophomore in 2006, was a A 2008 first-team All-SWAC pick after having intercepted 10 passes and deflecting 27 in his first two seasons with the Tigers. Although the Giants seem pretty much set at corner, my gut feeling is that they brought Johnson on board not only because they play Denver in two weeks, but more importantly because he is a playmakerwho also happens to have experience playing free safety. He also was a standout on special teams for Missouri State, where he played prior to transferring to Jackson State. I'll have more news after practice and the interviews, which get started in about an hour. Today we're getting the assistant coaches as well so there should be lots to talk about not just today but throughout the rest of the bye week. http://trainathought.insidefootball.com/2009/11/giants-place-wilkinson-on-ir-sign-cb-dj-johnson.html
Mr. P
JOHNSON AT A GLANCE: D.J. Johnson is a rookie cornerback from Jackson State University who joined the Broncos as a college free agent on April 27, 2009... Played 24 career games in two seasons at Jackson State after beginning his collegiate career at the University of Missouri... Totaled 66 career tackles (52 solo) and 10 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns, at Jackson State... Added 27 pass breakups and five kickoff returns for 120 yards while posting one forced fumble and one blocked kick with Jackson State... Named second-team All- America by the Associated Press and first-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference as a senior after leading his team and placing third in his conference with five interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown... Selected as the Defensive MVP of the 2007 SWAC Championship Game during a junior season in which he started 12 games and had a team-high five interceptions... Played seven games (4 starts) at Missouri and had 17 tackles... Attended LaMarque High School in LaMarque, Texas, where he competed in football, basketball and track... Majored in psychology at Jackson State... Domonique Johnson was born on Nov. 7, 1985, in Texas City, Texas. Strengths ....has shown the versatility to move to safety, while playing FS he flashed the ability to quickly close on receivers and read the quarterback's eyes to break on the ball..... Weaknesses His lackluster times have convinced some he's more a Cover-2 Zone CB or even an FS instead of the man 'cover corner'he had seemed to be. ..... fringe
Not a good sign that they got Ty Law from the old age home. They thought him better than this guy.
Mr. P
we've also had some decent success with grabbing people from other teams practice squads.
fishgutmartyr
Not a good sign that they got Ty Law from the old age home. They thought him better than this guy. Depends. Was Denver planning on him as a CB or safety? If we're converting him, that actually sounds kind of promising.

JMFP
Don't know much about DJ Johnson, but adding him is an upgrade, considering that Wilkinson hasn't done anything but take up space in the hot tub.

Treehugger
Wait, we have three defensive backs called Johnson now? 6'2" 200lbs sounds like a safety to me. If Ross is back after the bye, which it sounds like he may be, I'd expect this guy to compete with Rouse.
