So, tell me again why the Giants dont have at least a 100,000,000 dollar payroll and every other team in MLB doesnt have at least a 70,000,000 dollar payroll. Clarence the Blue Puppet
I love the Yankee haters. It's nothing more than plain old jealousy. There are owners in the league with MUCH more money than the Steinbrenners, yet George and his boys WANT to win, NOT just turn a profit. Winning creates those opportunities for a TV Network. Maybe if some of these owners (looking your way PIttsburgh, San Fran, Tampa, etc) put as much money into their team as they put into their bank accounts, they'd compete. The Yankees made great moves in the offseason and spent well, obviously because they won.

The top 10-12 teams financially can legitimately spend on roughly the same level as the yanks.

BleedinBlue
500 million dollar offseason payroll well spent. congrats! Not that it has to be justified to you as you are obviously spewing sour grapes. But be that as it may, it was 438 million spread out over many years. That annual total was about 56 million and that came after 52 million came off the books with the departure of players like Giambi, Ivan Rodriguez, Carl Pavano, Bobby Abreu, etc. for a mere 4 million increase in annual salary. Besides, the Yankees pay all the other teams millions in revenue sharing in which the owners sit on their yachts and pocket the cash rather than re-invest it in their teams. I don't feel sorry for owners who don't reinvest in players but simply relish in getting the cash handed them by the Yankees. Regardless........let the sour grapes begin. Yanks are champions and salary won't mean shit in the history books. When Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees for 200,000 dollars, it was considered outrageous as that was more than the value of nearly all other ballclubs combined, let alone a single player. Then Ruth was given a 20,000 a year contract which was many times more than any other baseball player and more than some teams' entire payroll. And guess what.......no body talks about the Babe making so much money or the Yankees buying all those championships that Ruth had a hand in. Guest StrahansGap
Boooo to the mutha fuckin hooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Highest payroll in the NFL goes to the Raiders and the Cowboys. Does that help them? No Highest payroll in the NBA goes to the Knicks, Cavaliers and the Mavericks. Does that help them? No Highest payroll in MLB goes to the Yankees. Did that help them? Yes. You know why? Because they know how to spend wisely and they know how to win.....and win with class. Face it people, the Yankees are the best franchise in all of sports past and present. Nobody will ever come close in any sport......ever. DEAL WITH IT BITCHES!!!

BleedinBlue
Ha, ha, Blu! But it's more like you guys can't let us celebrate without you're trying to make us feel guilty. I don't feel guilty - not even a little bit. I know there's a lot of sour grapes out there from Yankee haters and Yankee haters have been around since I was a child learning about baseball. Regardless of payroll, it takes a lot of hardwork, a whole lot of self-discipline, a willingness to sacrifice for the good of the team, and quite a bit of luck to get to the series. High salaries can be a huge detriment as well as a benefit as Danny Tartabull's monster contract and ultra-short career attests. And playing in New York tends to make a lot of players fold up like a cheap suit (Butch Wynegar, Kenny Rogers, etc.). Yankee fans have every reason to cheer their team and celebrate their accomplishments. I only wish I was in NYC today to join the celebration down the canyon of heroes at 11AM. BleedinBlue
I do wish the mets had spent better, and spent as large as the yankees did. They made the right decisions in the offseason. The Mets have spent a lot. It just seems (to me anyway) that no manager has been able to mix the right ingrediants to get the chemistry right. Plus they've had a ton of injuries at the wrong time. If they stay healthy and are managed right, they'll be on top again. One other reason that the Yankees payroll is so high is that they are the only team I've ever seen that pays through the nose to keep their players that have performed. Just look at the Red Sox for instance. They let Garcapia walk, same with Clemens, Pedro, Manny, etc. It seems that every team that wins a championship decide to let their star players walk because they will expect a lottery type contract and few teams reward their own players with lottery contracts. The Yanks have done just that and the "core of 4" that is currently on the roster make up much of the payroll. Petite is the only player the Yanks wouldn't spend whatever it takes to keep him, but he also really wanted to play in Houston. In the end, the Yanks brought him back though. BleedinBlue
Pedro was old and really couldn't pitch in the AL anymore. Garciparra was an apparent cancer in the clubhouse and we all know Manny lol. Manny and Damon were stars who were major contributors to the Sox championships. They were run out of town. Hell, Veritek (Captain) who also was a major contributor to those championships was shown the door unless he would play for half price. Boggs was getting long in the tooth, but he was a fine player for the Yanks afterwards and won himself a ring. Clemens won a Cy Young award and a couple of rings after getting the boot from the Sox. It's just normal for teams to NOT reward their heroes when contract time comes around. My point was that the Yankees are the one team that actually ponies up the cash and keeps them. fringe
HOLY SHIT! In 2002, the Yankees spent $17 million more in payroll than any other team. In 2003, the Yankees spent $35 million more in payroll than any other team. In 2004, the Yankees spent $57 million more in payroll than any other team. I mean, it's ridiculous from the start but this is pure absurdity. Basically, this is like the Yankees saying: "OK, let's spend exactly as much as the second-highest payroll in baseball. OK, we're spending exactly as much. And now ... let's add the Oakland A's. No, I mean let's add their whole team, the whole payroll, add it on top and let's play some ball!" In 2005, the Yankees spent $85 million more than any other team. Not a misprint. Eight five. In 2006, the Yankees spent $74 million more than any other team. In 2007, the Yankees spent $40 million more than any other team -- cutbacks, you know. In 2008, the Yankees spent $72 million more than any other team. In 2009, the Yankees spent $52 million more than any other team.
