BleedinBlue Posted September 25, 2009 Share Posted September 25, 2009 Okay, I read this morning at 5:30AM that the Giants had signed Aaron Rouse and I can't believe there hasn't been a mention of this on this board. Wierd. Anyway.....here's from Garaflo A scouting report on new NY Giants safety Aaron Rouse So who’s Aaron Rouse? Well, other than the guy who’s going to give me fits when trying to say Aaron Ross (or vice versa), he’s a guy the Giants claimed off waivers from the Packers and are hoping will live up to his status as a third-round pick in 2007. If so, he’d soften the blow of losing Kenny Phillips for the season. Rouse, at 6-4, 227 pounds, is much bigger than the average safety. That’s good when it comes time to lay the wood, but bad when it comes to moving in the open field. And that’s been precisely his problem during his brief NFL career. Rouse had four interceptions combined in his first two seasons and even returned one of them (off Peyton Manning) for a 99-yard touchdown. But that big play was offset by many he surrendered because, as our guys Tom Silverstein and Bob McGinn from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tell us, Rouse had trouble getting his big body to break down in space. They also tell us he was extremely stiff in the hips. Silverstein tells us the Packers’ safeties coach, Darren Perry (hardcore fans remember him from his days with the Steelers) would harp on Rouse to bend his knees and get that big body compact and more flexible. Apparently, he didn’t heed the advice well enough. Rouse can make the big hit, as he proved when he tackled Bears tight end Desmond Clark in Week 1 – a hit that resulted in a cracked rib for Clark. But our eyes in Green Bay tell us Rouse wasn’t as physical as the Packers had hoped he would be. Rouse does have ball skills, Silverstein and McGinn say, but apparently his lack of speed doesn’t allow him to get to enough balls. Plus, I’ve heard he didn’t always take the best angles to the ball. These are obviously the negatives because they’re what led to his release. But the Giants clearly believe he has an upside, so it’ll be up to safeties coach Dave Merritt to bring it out of him. Merritt has worked magic with the Giants’ safeties, considering the team has handed him a bunch of low-round picks, undrafted free agents and bargain-priced veterans the past couple of years. MEMO TO OSI, learn from the best de on our team (JUSTIN TUCK). if osi had other moves other than a speed rush he would smash strahan's single season sack record. watch the tape on osi. he's straight up the field and out of the play or he's swallowed by the tackle and is stuck quick sand until the ball carrier is at least 10yrds down the field. it pisses me off because i know he can do better than that............. also bj needs to shut his mouth and play ball. the more trash you talk the more you have to backup, the less you back it up the dumber you look after running your mouth. there's a reason why barry sanders, walter peyton, jim brown, eric dickerson was so good for so long...ever noticed how when tomlinson started talking how he fell off the map. shut your mouth and do your job, let your play on the field talk for you. talking does nothing but make you play out of character by trying to do too much when all you have to do is your job, com'on bj you're better than that... gggg-giants Inappropriate comment? I remember Butler being 6-3 or something, athletic but just goofy. he was always there after the ball got to the receiver, never beat the coverage or read the QB. Dave Merritt is a great coach and i'm glad he is on the Giant's staff. I think he'll be able to pull a contributor out of A. Rouse, even if he is not a full time starter or every down Safety, i think he will make quality play time when he does get on the field... at least i hope. Inappropriate comment? Alert us. Someone pointed out we won the SB with Butler back there. I am drawing a blank who was the 3rd safety that year, the undrafted rookie who had knee issues I believe. So I would give a slight edge to Johnson-Brown-Rouse over Johnson-Butler-undrafted rookie with knee issues. I am over my Philips depression this morning, time to move on. Aaron rouse will stand his ground, he will be a key asset to your squad. Im glad another team noticed his potential unlike the packers stupid gm. Everyone take their expectations of what the defense would be like with Kenny Phillips in it and now bring it down to your expectations of the Giants defense with Shaun Williams in it. The Giants' defense is different than most teams. I'm hoping he is a better fit for our style of game than he was for the Packers. Let's hope Merritt knows how to groom him into the system so that he's effective. He won't be a regular player (barring a rash of injuries) for awhile and if he feels welcomed by the Giants, he might really turn it on. Apparantly, he had been on Perry's shit list for awhile (secondary/saftey coach) and it's hard for anyone to be their best when the boss just doesn't like you. The Giants are desperate here to fill the void, and Rouse still has air of potential about him, but there's got to be an issue with a 3rd rounder who gets dropped from a team simply going nowhere. That said, I think this ensures more time for Boley on the field with his speed and also, you'll probably see a lot of 3 corner formations or nickel. I'm just still expressing my disappointment over losing KP. We cannot afford another injury this week to our defense, especially in the secondary or on DLine. That would be a disaster.
