Guest StrahansGap
Maybe if you intercepted that ball thrown to you on "the drive". Since you didn't..........good luck. Anybody pays this guy that kind of money is retarted: Free agent Asante Samuel is rumored to be in search of a ten-year, $100 million contract, including $30 million up front. Apparently he doesn't just want more than Nate Clements (seven years, $64 million), he wants much more. The way Samuel and his agent are speaking, it sounds like he doesn't have a preference of where to sign. Some GMs are pegging him as a system DB, but Samuel will likely go to the highest bidder
Lubeck
No player is worth that much money or that much of a long-term commitment. The players are becoming increasingly greedy and it disgusts me.
BleedinBlue
He obviously is willing to play for a losing team because any team willing to blow that much of their cap space to keep him means they'll have to forego a lot of decent players. Kind of a catch-22 situation if you want a lot of cash and also want to have a shot at a superbowl. Funny thing is......he's not even a shut down corner. He'll be lucky to get half that....and that will probably come from the skins or something.
BlueInCanada
'Skins will do it.
Nas
'Skins will do it. Even the skins won't do it. This is just stupid and isn't worthy of our discussion...
JayD
I knew this would happen as soon as Nate signed with the 9ers. Its really a shame.
Treehugger
Give it to him, with $80 mil of it payable at the end of the 10th season provided he's still on the roster.
Lubeck
The thing that is disappointing is they are making the CB position an overpaid position in terms of how much money out of the cap is being committed to them. With the way you defend against a modern NFL offense with all the rules limiting the DBs ability to cover for long more money should be committed to your front 7, getting the best pass rush you can get. DBs are becoming a system-position where talent is still highly valued but individual performance is not.

A good secondary is needed but not as much as LBs and DLine. You could have all Bailey's but with no pass rush it wouldn't matter. The secondary is so handcuffed that the only real strategy is to make the QB have as little time as possible. The perfect example is the SB. Lubeck
In todays MMQB by Peter King he talks about how the 49ers went out and spend massive money on Nate Clements and Michael Smith to upgrade their secondary and turned in near identical pass defense stats. Disrupt the other teams passing game and have playmaking LBs to sniff out the running plays.
Sephiroth
I knew this would happen as soon as Nate signed with the 9ers. Its really a shame. Man, the money being tossed around last offseason for marginal players was really pretty amazing. The market for marquee players is ruined. One better-than-average guy or a half-dozen solid players. Which would you rather have?

The CB's played pretty well, considering. BTW, I heard on the radio this morning something that rings very true: "The further away from the ball, the bigger the ego".
