Giants trade RB Grant to Packers Posted by Mike Garafolo September 01, 2007 5:28PM Categories: Breaking News Joe Epstein/The Star-LedgerGrant's impressive preseason landed him in Green Bay with a chance to compete for carries. The Giants have traded RB Ryan Grant, a Don Bosco grad, to the Packers for an undisclosed draft pick, according to someone familiar with the trade talks. Grant had an excellent preseason (18 rushes for 90 yards and a touchdown), but the Giants didn't have room on the roster for him with Brandon Jacobs, Reuben Droughns, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw all likely to be on the final roster that's scheduled to be announced at 6 p.m. The person familiar with the trade talks, who requested anonymity because the official announcement hasn't been made yet, said the Packers tried to send one of their kickers, Mason Crosby or Dave Rayner, to the Giants in lieu of the draft pick. But the Giants said they were confident with Lawrence Tynes. Grant will now get a chance to compete for carries in the Packers' backfield with the injured Vernand Morency and rookie Brandon Jackson. It's not a bad situation for Grant, who missed all of last season with a hand injury suffered in an accident at a night club. Grant worked hard to get back in playing shape and it showed this preseason. Green Bay obviously noticed and pulled the trigger on the trade with less than an hour before final rosters were to be announced. Grant had been told by the Giants he was going to make the team. Today's trade is Jerry Reese's third since being named Giants general manager in January. He previously acquired Droughns from the Browns and Tynes from the Chiefs. (UPDATE: Someone involved in the negotiations said it's a sixth-round pick. Not bad in exchange for a former undrafted free agent.) MG Not bad for a UDFA, even better if he wound up being cut when Douglas comes back. Assuming Tynes was traded for a conditional 7th, we just improved next year's draft. If it was a 6th, we still end up in good shape, assuming Green Bay has a worse record than we ultimately do (not an unreasonable assumption). If it was for the 5th, then we can gather together with pitchforks and torches.
jranieli
I am not comfortable with Tynes. I would have rather have seen Huston on the team. I don't know what happened behind the scenes but what we say, Tynes was awful.
NightFire
Good for him and he now has legitimate chance to do something. Even if he had made the Giants roster he would have seen very limited playing time.
Sephiroth
Lawrence Tynes sucks ass. The end. I hope we pick up a kicker this week... but seeing how we've ignored the LT, FB, backup TE and DT situation these past few years, I'm not too sure that'll happen. Dude what the hell are you talking about? In the past four/five years we've spent a 1st and 3rd and 4th round picks on DT's, 2nd and 5th round picks on BACKUP TE's, and we've drafted 3 T's. You may have a point about FB but it's not like that was a position that was killing us up until this point. And even LT wasn't much of a problem til Puke was cut. Just because some picks were misses, doesn't mean we weren't addressing the positions. We can't exactly draft every position in the first round or snatch up the best free agents at all positions. fishgutmartyr
Rayner in town tonight/tommorrow. Heh, get the pick, let GB cut Rayner, and have Rayner in the next day. Reese is great. Anybody know anything about Dovonte Edwards? We picked him up as well. CB from Minny.
