fringe
From espn.com: In an interview with GQ magazine that's currently on newsstands, the typically outspoken Tigers designated hitter said Latin players have replaced African-Americans as baseball's most prevalent minority because they are easier to control. "I called it years ago. What I called is that you're going to see more black faces, but there ain't no English going to be coming out. … [it's about] being able to tell [Latin players] what to do -- being able to control them," he told the magazine. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2891875
Herc
wow, and no polls or race baiting articles from 50% of the writers there? im shocked, and im sure the reaction by espn.com would be the same if a white guy said that
feefifoefum
I've always said that Sheffield was a racist prick. Ever notice his thin mustache?

njsmalls
Eventually half the League will be Domincan and the other Half Japanese. Everyone (except David Ortiz) will weigh less than 190lbs. Weird wind-ups and stolen bases.

Clarence the Blue Puppet
So does he think that he his helping his race with this comment?
feefifoefum
How would this comment go over? Larry Bird: "The NBA is bringing in European players because they know they are easier to control than a white guy from Indiana." My guess is that Larry would be answering tougher questions than Sheffield ever has to.

fringe
if any other prominent black ball player said it, it may mean something. but, sheffield is so off the charts stupid that he gets a pass. it's just gary being gary.
NYHC GIANT
Sheffield made a point of telling GQ he is from a race that "demands respect" ..I find this disturbing, because respect is earned, not given. Last time I heard of someone saying that, it was comin' out of the mouth of a very short angry Austrian with a funny moustache.
Herc
Jemele Hill on Sheffield's comments. yeah and she backed him up. im sure she would've backed up curt schilling or david wells if they said the same thing
