Mussina to take on Jays
Toronto (12-10) at New York (12-10), 1:05 p.m. ET
By Kit Stier / Special to MLB.com
Joe Torre is enjoying watching Jason Giambi bat these days.
The Yankees manager would love to see his first baseman have the kind of game on Sunday against Toronto that he had against the Blue Jays on Saturday. That would go a long way to help the Yankees get on their way to Boston with 2-1 win in their weekend series against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.
Giambi slammed a three-run homer, his eighth home run this season, into the third deck in right field in a four-run first inning, and later added another RBI in New York's 17-6 win over Toronto. "Jason has picked up basically where he left off last year," Torre said. "We are certainly happy that he is as comfortable and confident as he is right now. We certainly need every one of them. It certainly makes our lineup tough to pitch to."
Giambi, a former AL MVP, upped his RBI total to 25, which ranks him near the top of the American League.
Torre is wary of the Blue Jays and knows he'll need all the offense he can get in order to win this series.
"They are very good and they don't know any fear or anything else," the Yankees manager said. "We have to respect that -- and I'm just glad I have the team I have and they keep going at it."
Pitching matchup
TOR: LHP Gustavo Chacin (4-0, 5.11 ERA)
Chacin was 0-4 against the Yankees in 2005, but he beat them in Toronto on April 19. He had 10 runs of offensive support and gave up five runs on seven hits in that 10-5 victory.
NYY: RHP Mike Mussina (3-1, 2.45 ERA)
A win in this start would give Mussina 20 career victories against Toronto and equal is career-best win total against any team -- he has also bested the Twins 20 times. Mussina's only no-decision this season was in his last start, and he beat the Blue Jays in Toronto on April 19, yielding one run over 7.1 innings.
Player to watch
Johnny Damon established a career high by scoring five runs in a win over Toronto on Saturday. The new Yankees center fielder hit two homers, singled, walked, stole a base and reached second base on a popup to Toronto's second baseman that was lost in the sun.

Only one team has a better record then us... the Reds... and they are only a .5 game ahead
the reds?
-
Damn a great season ended on a real sour note.....
-
Apparently, the Giants aren't sold on Tuck for the future. Or maybe we foresee Tuck moving to DT as a Giant.
No matter it was a dumb move we should have drfted a CB.....
-
Thing is, we still got our guy at WR, and we also got our future at DE in Mathias who can also come in now and maybe keep Strahan more well rested.
Why jump to concluisons so quickly?
Because we have Umineyora(sp?) and Tuck as our future DE...im still stuck on Tuck i think if he is given a chance to start he will be very good....
-
16-7 feels os fucken good
Just one game behind the Pink Sox feels good too!
-
I hate this draft except for Moss even though i would have taken Jackson EA fucked up big....kind of pathetic.....
-
We made history too, a run in every inning thats pretty good offense....
-
This was game shaping into a kind that we lose! I'm very suprised we won!
We fucking domninated them!
-
Yankees blew out the blue jays
just thought id let everyone know!!!
-
Johnson is just looking like shit...Joe is forcing a win for RJ...stupid...take him out, he's already over 100 pitches!
Whats the score?
-
Very Happy with the number 2 pick but why the fuck would we draft a DE when we have 3 that can last us at least 2-3 more years???
-
I cant see San Fran going QB..... but Lienard is a hometowner...
I dont know there last 1st round pick(the number one overall) was a QB i see them going TE to give Smith a good target
Vernon DAvis is who i see them going with....
-
AJ Hawk was selected.....
San Francisco is on the Clock
-
I see AJ Hawk going to the packers...I do think he is overhyped i only wathed him when he played ND in that Bowl Game and he didnt win me over....
-
It's funny, for months, everyone was predicting that the Jets would take Ferguson anyway. What are the chances AJ Hawke goes?
Right now there only tlaking about D'Brick and Leinart...
And the Jets select.....
D'Brickashaw Furgeson
Safe pick in my mind...
