  1. Honestly, I think of it the exact opposite. All teams should be drafting BPA, but especially bad teams; you can stick them anywhere day one and get results. Good teams have players that are already starting in some positions; if anything, they're getting less out of BPA because there may be someone better in front of them. Oh don't get me wrong, I think he'll be a pretty good player. I just think at the time there were much better players available, and we already have 2-3 starting caliber players at that position. We have no starting TE, LG, LB, etc. right now; why not draft one of those guys that were more highly rated and will come in and start day one?
  2. Those are great points about the receivers; we also don't know what we're getting out of Golladay, but you'd hope it's more than what we've gotten so far. We do need a WR (or at least a pass catcher) but I don't know why you'd reach for a 5'8" guy when there's other, more proven, legit guys on the board. I know I may be overreacting, but honestly, this is a big alarm bells moment for me. Schoen is going to be here for five years at least, but this is not a promising start, and this isn't how competitive teams are built. If you take a look at Baltimore's draft in contrast to ours, you'll see what I mean; every pick is best player available, little to no reaches. That's how you build a quality football team, not by taking projected 5th and 6th round guys early in the draft; you take the best guy there and if there's holes, you fill them with quality free agents. I have no patience to watch another five years of shitty Giants football.
  3. Nobody has seen them on the field, but there is college tape. I'm not someone who decides he likes a player based on a write up, I look at their film and decide for myself (look at how much I hated the guys in the "not seeing it" thread). This is true, but there were better players to be had IMO. I'm not going to try and guess what other teams have other players rated as, but I do know how I rate the players and who I would have taken in our spots. The "guys I would have liked" isn't hindsight, it's who I legit would have taken in those spots.
  4. I thought this would be fun too. I've always kept a loose running list of guys I had wanted instead of guys we took, but only one time did I do a hindsight draft. We should do this every year. Here's my guys: Round 1 - no 5 overall: Kayvon Thibodeaux Who I'd take - Kayvon Thibodeaux Comments - knocked it out of the park. I think his floor is Jadaveon Clowney; ceiling is Julius Peppers. The kid has everything you need to be an impact DE in the league. Round 1 - No 7 overall: Evan Neal Who I'd take - Evan Neal Comments - another great pick. Neal has work to do; his balance is often pretty terrible, he's not as nasty as I'd like, and there's way too much leaning. I think by the halfway point of the season though and with some good NFL coaching, he could be a very good RT for us moving forward.. Round 2, No. 43 overall: Wan’Dale Robinson Who I'd take - TE Trey Mc Bride Comments - a little early for Mc Bride, but we got the best DE, and arguably the best RT, I'm happy to now snag the best TE in the draft. Can do everything good, but perhaps nothing great. He's light years ahead of anything we have on the team right now. Round 3, No. 67 overall: Joshua Ezeudu Who I'd take - LB Nakobe Dean Comments - I now understand the trepidation with passing on Dean in the second, but his injuries (pec strain, meniscus) are honestly very minor, and he's played through injuries. At this point I'm willing to swing for the fences on this guy. Dude is another day one starter; if he's healthy he's the next London Fletcher. We're going to really regret going up against this guy twice a year if he can stay on the field. Not sure why we reached for the 11th rated guard and 151st overall rated player in this spot instead. Round 3, No. 81 overall: Cordale Flott (CB, LSU) Who I'd take - LB Leo Chenal Comments - I'd have taken Chenal like perennial Super Bowl contenders Kansas City did with the other pick if Dean had been gone; watch his tape against Linderbaum last season and tell me Chenal didn't eat his lunch. Provides insurance if Dean can't go; if he can, this is going to be one of the best one-two punches at ILB in the league, possibly the best. Savage blitzer who would be awesome in Martindale's system. Or, you know... we could take a 175lb corner if you wanna go the Joe Schoen route. Round 4, No. 112 overall: Daniel Bellinger (TE, San Diego State) Who I'd have taken - RB Isiah Spiller Comments - Can't believe Spiller is still there and we didn't take him. Actually wait, yes I can... he's not a "two rounds too early reach" like Schoen seems to prefer. If he's not an immediate day one impact player, he'll be the starter by week eight after Saquon Barkley and whoever is backing him up go down. Every down back and a real difference-maker in the league; no need for seasoning, he's coming in and playing right now. Round 4, No. 114 overall, Dane Belton (S, Iowa) Who I'd have taken - OG/OT Zach Tom Comments - to be honest, I don't love Tom here... but he's light years ahead of Dane Belton in this spot, who's honestly not very good and was taken roughly 70 spots ahead of where he was projected. Tom probably projects inside to guard, but could probably handle RT duties. He's a very good athlete but needs some refinement on his technique. Offers positional versatility and has spent time at center. Round 5, No. 146 overall: Micah McFadden (LB, Indiana) Who I'd have taken - RB Ty Chandler Comments - watch his tape; Ty Chandler is Ahmad Bradshaw. Quick, fast, elusive, plays bigger than his size, and a good receiver. McFadden is a colossal reach again; Chandler provides day one utility as a versatile 3rd down back with plus potential as an eventual starter. Good that we got those special teams linebackers covered with the pick we made though... the 210th rated player... I guess you can never have too many of them. Round 5, No. 147 overall: D.J. Davidson (DT, Arizona State) Who I'd have taken - CB Zyon McCollum Big, tough, physical DB with off the charts athleticism, I'm not sure how this guy fell to the 5th. Would fit in Martendale's system right now though he obviously needs a little bit of coaching. A way better prospect than Cordelle Flop. Round 5, No. 173 overall: Marcus McKethan (OG, North Carolina) Who I'd have taken - OG Jamaree Salyer Comments - has Joe Schoen explained to anyone why he took the 26th best guard and 327th player overall when the 7th best guard and 122nd overall player was on the board? I'd really like to hear this one. Salyer is probably best suited to the inside but again offers positional versatility as he can play on either the right or left side. He's one of the best remaining guys here, but hey, why take a good player from a good O-line when you can take a terrible player from one of college's worst o-lines? It's the Joe Schoen way! Round 6, No. 182 overall Darrian Beavers (LB, Cincinnati) Who I'd have taken - OG Lecitus Smith Comments - another case of best player available, I thought Smith was closer to a 4th round pick. He caught my eye at the Senior Bowl and in practices. I'm actually OK with Beavers here but I think Smith will end up being the better player overall. So in conclusion... Seph grabbed you a day one starting DE, RT, and TE, two linebackers that between them should provide great play, three guards to pick from to provide depth and possible future starting play, two RBs to provide day one contributions and more after Barkley leaves, and a very good corner. I'll take my guys over Shoen's guys. In fact, I'm just gonna say it... I'm not sure Schoen knows what he's doing.
  5. It's a great idea, but you have to actually bring in good players. Spending high draft picks on projected fringe NFL players is a bad idea, and these guys probably aren't going to be any better than the guys they're replacing. Again, not talking about Thibodaux and Neal, those guys should be quality players for us. The rest of these guys are throwaway players.
  6. It's really funny reading all of the draft grades. The same guys who said for every pick, "well that was pretty high for him" are now giving "A" grades on the draft. My only explanation is that these are the same guys who've been saying that Schoen is the next great GM for the past 5 years and now they have egg on their face. I've also heard "they took guys early, but they fit their system." That's a terrible way to draft; if your coordinator is out in a year suddenly you have two dozen guys that don't fit the new guy's system. Hope I'm wrong but outside of the top two guys this is really nothing to be excited about.
  7. "Be on the team," not necessarily work out. Basically I expect we'll keep 4 of these guys and 1-2 will be good.
  8. D+ from me. First round was great. Robinson could be a good WR but was taken too early and we have a terrible track record with undersized speedsters. The rest of the draft literally was reaches. Again, not impressed with Schoen and co. This is not how competitive teams are built.
  9. Whelp, not gonna lie... I'm extremely disappointed in this draft, and honestly I'm not quite sure of the direction of this franchise. Lots of draft capital that was squandered on reach picks, "potential" guys, and role players. Joe Schoen did not inspire confidence and I worry about the future of the team if this is how he evaluates talent. We've seen the "GM who reaches because he's smarter than everyone" before and it never ends well. This was pretty much the last shot to acquire quality talent but I'm only seeing three, maybe four guys that'll be on the team in four years. That ain't good when you had ten picks. Of course let's see how it works out... but I'd be stunned if this works out.
  10. Isn't there some college backup we can draft there instead? Maybe somebody on no one's draft board?
  11. Hey look, another projected sixth rounder taken two rounds too high. I like getting out in front of this stuff so let me say it first: Fuck Joe Schoen. Dude looks like he's never drafted before.
  12. I'm actually gonna start a "who'd we get... who'd you want in that spot" thread after drafts so we can have some hindsight. I think that would be fun.
  13. Yeah I only started watching tape on him last night but did like what I saw.
  14. I mean, yes... but a lot of those guys can be day one starters (RBs, OL, and TE especially) or at the least significant role players. It's super fucking disappointing. When you've done your work on the late round guys and we're taking reaches and scrubs... and I'm yelling "George Kittle is there!" "We still have a shot at Trey Smith!" it's a fucking bummer.
  15. Whoops, indeed. Fixed. For the record, I like both of them.
  16. Who fucking cares, you know this front office will reach for scrubs and no-names instead. However, for posterity (and so I can come back in two years and say "I told you so")... DT Perrion Winfrey RBs Dameon Pierce, Ty Chandler, Isiah Spiller, Kyren Williams TE Isiah Likely, Jake Ferguson, Charlie Kolar OL - Jamaree Salyer, Lecitus Smith, Darian Kinnard, Daniel Faalele, Zach Tom, Marquis Hayes WR - Calvin Austin I'd be stunned if any of these guys end up on the team, however, the guy who was a special teamer that bounced around 3 different colleges should be worth a look.
  17. Good thing we made all those trade downs so that we can use the extra picks to reach for players that will be undrafted free agents on Sunday.
  18. I knew he'd end up in the division. Man, fuck this team.
  19. Projected to be an "average backup or special teamer." We just spent a third on him. It great that Schoen didn't fuck up the two picks my 75 year old mom could have made, but I'm not impressed. It may be a long 5 years with this guy.
  20. I'm pissed because once again there were a better players here and this guy was projected as a late 4th. Some had him going as late as the sixth. Schoen has officially squandered the good will I felt towards him. These last two picks are not good.
  21. What the actual fuck. I take back all the nice things I said yesterday.
  22. This actually explains quite a bit.
  23. I'm starting to think this as well. Makes no sense otherwise. I'm thinking that between Shep,. Saquon, and Toney, there's a gonna be a lot of missed games. This guy steps in and you don't have to redesign your offense. Not the pick I would have liked but honestly he looks good. I'm seeing him listed at 5' 11" though.
  24. I've seen three sites have him listed as a third rounder. Still a reach and absolutely inexcusable with Dean sitting there.
